Wild thing you make my heart sing

Moving to live in a place in the middle of Nature is one of the best things we have ever done. There is so much wild life here, like the ‘wasp spider’ in the picture which we spotted a couple of days ago.
Initially worried, like every time we see a ‘new’ insect we don’t know, we take the opportunity to research it, together with our kids, on books and/or the internet.
This big harmless spider is apparently common in all of southern europe but, since I was raised in a city (where many species don’t survive and don’t venture) I had never seen one before.
The same is true for a lot of animals: from bugs, to butterflies, to reptiles, to birds and to mammals that we happen to see in this magical place in the middle of forests where we chose to live (if you have just started following us, you might want to take a look at our website http://www.sanctuaryofjoy.org to see what we do).

This particular spider was found climbing on the play house we built for the kids, which was made recycling the structure of a 15-yrs old IKEA high bed that has been used in different periods of time by all of our three children, over the years. More about that in a future post.

PS – The quote is from a song from the ’60s by ‘The Wild Ones’ that was later made famous by ‘The Troggs’ and by Jimi Hendrix.
